Solomon Schechter Day School Las Vegas Opens 2009-2010
The Solomon Schechter Day Scool Las Vegas opened its sixth year of school on Monday, August 24, 2009! This year is special because it is both the first year the school has not added a new grade (Schechter is a K-5 elementary school) and the first year students will begin the year in the Friedman Family Pavilion. Schechter classrooms are state-of-the-art and come with SMART Board technology. Amazingly, even in these difficult economic times, conservative Jewish day school education in Las Vegas - the partnership between Solomon Schechter, the Temple Beth Sholom Preschool, and the Midbar Kodesh Temple Early Childhood Center - will still continue to educate nearly 300 students this year. All three schools demonstrate that you do not have to sacrifice a high-quality Jewish and Hebrew education in order to have the highest of quality secular education. With outstanding faculty, community support, and committed parents, the Solomon Schechter Day School's vision of students who are as equally literate in Hebrew as they are in English; as facile with a siddur as they are with a microscope; as comfortable discussing American politics as they are Israeli - this vision is being realized.
Speaking of microscopes...
On the very first day of school, grades began to make use of Las Vegas' only Robotics & Engineering Laboratory in Schechter's state-of-the-art Science Lab. Under the dynamic leadership of new Science Teacher Rebecca Rouas, Schechter students will receive cutting edge science education. Kids came home the first day of school enthusiastic about science...and everything else!
Schechter Parent Organization Hosts Welcome Back Picnic
The Schechter Parent Organization will hold its annual "Welcome Back" Picnic on Sunday, September 13th. The event will take place in Paseos Park in Summerlin. A large crowd is expected. The afternoon will feature water play, face-painting, a bounce house and much, much more! The Schechter Parent Organization looks forward to offering Schechter parents even more opportunities to learn, celebrate, and create community than ever before.
Schechter Launches New Shirah Program
Beginning on Friday, August 28th Schechter introduced a new shirah program with the new Temple Beth Sholom Cantor Avraham Alpert. Each month, the school will gather for a rousing, camp-style song session featuring contemporary Jewish and Israeli music. Music is a powerful tool for inspiring and motivating students and Schechter is excited to add this component to its already strong music program. There's nothing like the sound of a whole school singing their hearts out to encourage school spirit!
Solomon Schechter Celebrates the Holidays!
Everyone has been preparing for and celebrating this season's joyous holidays. Each department of the school is involved in creative activities during this festive time. Time during Jewish Studies has spent learning to blow shofar and discuss the High Holidays. Students created beautiful decorations for the school's sukkah during Art; melodies were mastered during Music; even PE got in the holiday spirit! The General Studies teachers are in the holiday spirit using apples for everything from counting to measuring to weighing. This is the sort of curricular integration that makes Solomon Schechter so unique and special.
Schechter Holds Back to School Night
On September 15th, Schechter held its annual "Back to School" night. Parents had an opportunity in a relaxed environment to learn more about their children's teachers, classroom routines, curriculum and special projects. It was also an opportunity for parents to volunteer for committees and find all sorts of interesting ways to get involved in the school. Thanks to the Parent Organization and the Schechter Committee for their help in organizing the evening.
